Roller Coaster

Peter Collins throws his Lancia Ferrari D50 up through Radillon during the 1956 Belgian Grand Prix, pursued by Stirling Moss’s Maserati 250F.  While Moss is known as the greatest driver never to have won the world championship, that label might just as well apply to the dashing Collins with his fighter pilot looks and mercurial turn of speed. By the summer of ‘56 both drivers had served their Grand Prix apprenticeship at HWM and traded wins through the season, with Collins winning at the super fast Reims and Spa Francorchamps. In with a shot at winning the title during his first season with Ferrari, Collins selflessly gave his car to team mate Fangio at the final round at Monza, allowing the Argentine to take the 4th of his 5 world championships. Collins would never get another chance - a week after winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1958 he was killed when he ran wide and was catapulted into a tree at the Nurburgring.
