In the mid 1970s, sportscar racing was in the doldrums. Matra won the World Championship for Makes in 1974 almost unopposed with Ferrari having abandoned the category to focus on Formula One while Porsche was in transition, focussed on wringing more and more performance from the relatively humble underpinnings of the 911. Meanwhile, production based GT categories provided an outlet for a mixture of amateur and professional drivers, the spirit of which endures to the present day. Here, at Le Mans the Porsche Carrera RSR of Herbert Muller and Gijs Van Lennep leads the Ferrari Daytona of Cyril Grandet and Dominique Bardini (which finished 5th overall and won the GT Class) and the BMW 3.0 CSL of Hean Claude Aubriet and "Depnic" which won the Touring Class. While the Ferrari and BMW were pukka production-based GT cars, the Porsche's Turbo technology had not yet found its way to the road cars so it ran in the 3.0 sports class finishing second overall. It would give rise to the 911 Turbo road car and the even more specialist 911-based 935 cars which would go on to win Le Mans outright in 1979 and which helped to shape Porsche's Turbo legend.
