Smashing Records

61 years, and 61 summers have passed since Stirling Moss, Denis Jenkinson and their Mercedes 300 SLR won the Mille Miglia and still no feat in motor racing comes close. A single 992 mile lap on ordinary roads, surrounded by natural hazards, leaving Brescia at breakfast time, charging cross country, down the Adriatic coast and across the Abruzzi mountains to Rome before charging north through Siena, Florence and Bologna and back to Brescia in time for tea.  Including stops for fuel, tyres and to have their time cards stamped, Moss and Jenks took 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds (an average speed of 99 mph) to complete the course -  a winning margin of more than 32 minutes - and a record which will stand for all time.
