Le Mans Legends

The image of the Porsche 917s of the JWA Gulf team ranged against the might of the 5 litre Ferrari 512s is etched indelibly on the minds of all motorsport enthusiasts, having been the stars of Steve McQueen’s Le Mans film which told a fictionalised account of the 1970 24 Hour race. Here, the 512 of Arturo Merzario and Clay Reggazoni battles the number 20 917 of Jo Siffert and Brian Redman, the latter car being driven in the film by McQueen’s alter ego Michael Delaney. In reality, both cars retired and the race was won by the Porsche Salzburg 917 of Attwood and Herrmann. However, it is the blue and orange Gulf cars which have passed into legend.
