Cat out of the Bag
In response to Ferrari's brutish and unscientific
4.9 litre 375 Plus, Jaguar produced the
legendary 3.4 litre 'D' type using Malcolm
Sayer's aerodynamics to compensate for a
lack of power. Here on its debut, at Le
Mans in 1954, the 'D' of Hamilton and Rolt
(number 14) finished just 90 seconds behind
the 375 Plus of Gonzalez and Trintignant
after 24 hours racing. The Moss/Walker car
(12) led initially but retired. Jaguar returned
however, and added victories in 1955, '56
and '57 to their 1951 and '53 triumphs.
