Driving an Aston Martin DBR1, Stirling Moss gives his customary wave to Peter Collins as he passes the latter’s Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa as they power across the tortuous mountains of the Targa Florio course during the 1958 running of the classic race.  Moss was regarded as perhaps the greatest sportscar racer of all time but Collins was no slouch – and had partnered Moss to win the Targa in the Mercedes 300 SLR in 1955.  On this occasion, Moss was out of luck, retiring the semi-works Aston with gearbox trouble while Collins went on to finish 4th, partnered by Phil Hill.
